The First Avant Garde collection from Kino International is my all time celebrated film collection. I was therefore quite exited when I learned that Kino was issuing another one. The following review is my humble plan of this collection.

I have to admit that Avant Garde 2 is far from as kindly as the first one. The transfer is better (almost perfect) and the sound/music is really reliable, but many of the films are objective kitsch. Some of the films are curious while few of them are really obliging.
Almost all of the films are from USA which may account for the weakness of this collection (Avant Garde came slack to maturity in America) . Coriously the most eminent American Avant Garde film is missing from this collection, Namely “Meshes of the Afternoon” by Maya Deren and Alexander Hammid. It does how ever have four early films by Brackage and two of them are really excellent (”Interim” and “Unglassed Windows Cast a Dreadful Reflection”) . The third reliable American film in this collection is the classic “The Drop of the House of Usher” by James Watson and Melville Webber (the transfer of the film is astonishing) .

There are three French films on the disk and all of them are friendly (”Pacific 231″, “Arriere saison” and “Venom and Eternity”) . Venom and Eternity is a classic Avant Garde masterpiece (presented in a longer version than previously seen in the USA; a 111 min. version) . It has not lost any of its punches and is a must search for for anyone enthusiastic in Avant Garde and the limits (and the nature) of the Film language.
To sum it up. There are 17 films in this collection, 6 of them are really agreeable, about 4 are consuming, but the rest is kitsch (IMO) .

This is an important collection of avant-garde titles from the 1940s and 1950s containing some very rare films. The films of Brakhage (at least his early titles), Marie Menken, Sidney Peterson, James Broughton and Gregory Markopoulos are all difficult to gaze and it is extremely necessary to have them in this collection. These are all major artists of the period who should be better known. Apart from Brakhage, who has a unbelievable collection available on a Criterion disc, most of the these filmmakers’ films have not been availble on DVD in the past. They are crucial to the early development of the American avant-garde in what has often been referred to as its “psycho-dramatic” or “trance” period. Whether we refer to them as psychodramas, trance films or simply poetic avant-garde films is not really what matters. They are considerable films and helped explain what the medium was satisfactory of, as well as redefining the notion of poetic cinema.
It’s gigantic to finally gaze Sidney Peterson’s first film (made with James Broughton) on DVD (The Potted Psalm) as well as a Workshop 20 production made with students at the California School of Ravishing Arts (The Cage) . I’d also appreciate to survey The Lead Shoes and Mrs. Frenhofer and the Monotaur finally released on DVD – perhaps in another future collection. Peterson is one of the few upright surrealists of the cinema, and his work is mind-bendingly unusual. Markopoulos has been inaccessible for decades, so to have even one film (Christmas, USA) by him is valuable. Again more Markolpoulos next time. Broughton’s films are available in a more complete, separate collection, so his film (Adventures of Jimmy) is less crucial to have but is nonetheless a welcome addition to the package. It’s also tremendous to have a couple of rare Brakhage titles (Interim, Unglassed Windows Cast a Poor Reflection, and The Arrangement to Shadow Garden.) The Watson and Webber version of The Drop of the House of Usher is very vital and logically should have appeared in volume 1 of this series along with Lot in Sodom which was on that collection. Nonetheless, I’m elated it’s here. The collection also contains some European work that is superior to have (especially the film by Dimitri Kirsanov) . I’m not a stout fan of the long Isou film (Venon and Eternity) but I’m positive there will be those who can argue why it is considerable, especially to the development of a sure anarchic strain in European avant-garde (both film and theory) . I’ll concept it again in the hopes that I can sight its importance.
All in all, this collection will give you a valid study into the avant-garde film of the era and is a must have for anyone involved in experimental cinema. The absence of Maya Deren’s films is distinguished but should not dissuade anyone from purchasing what is clearly a major release. (Deren’s films are contained in another collection available on DVD.)

I guess if you think a wooden box and letter opener are worth the extra $ plus remember no Sharpe’s Challenge in the complete set………..Amazon really needs to get the sets priced accordingly….doesn’t make sense to pay more for less….
Great Mini-series! Does NOT include “Sharpe’s Challenge”
This is a great mini-series. Sound and color could better. Does not appear to be “restored” or “remastered”. Colors can appear less crisp or sharp on HDTV’s or big screen TV’s. DOES NOT include “Sharpe’s Challenge” as this has not aired yet on TV (Will air on BBC America on 23 & 24 April 2006). Otherwise this is a good set. Letter opener is solid and works well. Wooden box is more or less junk and I dumped mine.
A Sharpe Collection
Most Americans had never heard of Sharpe’s Rifles before its debut on BBC America. Fortunately I have internet friends in the U.K. and asked them what they knew about the series. Several were huge fans and already had the collection. Several had recorded the series as it was shown. I decided to go ahead and purchase the boxed set and was very pleased when it arrived. The ammunition box case is a nice touch, the letter opener is balanced like a throwing knife and is really sharp 
. The map of Napoleonic Europe during the Sharpe stories was very nice since most Americans know more about our Civil War than the Napoleonic period in Europe. The stories also prompted us to buy a few of the books by Bernard Cornwell. The DVDs also contain scenes from the series that were cut out on BBC America, probably for commercial space. That’s the other great thing – no commercials!

Watch the last segment of the unique Heavy Metal called “Tarna” instead. The region design of HM2K is lifted directly from that. They took a tight short myth from one film and stretched it out needlessly here.
The details have changed, but it’s composed the same legend.
The same major dwelling points exist: “Joe Nobody” encounters uncommon green object that turns him outrageous. Newly spoiled terrible guy slaughters docile people without warning. Babe in high heel boots hunts him down for payback. Bouncy cleavage shots ensue.

Don’t glean me cross, I dig the cleavage… but no one actually got down and dirty. Onscreen nudity without sex = Monotonous.
Several scenes were torn DIRECTLY from the unique movie’s “Tarna” segment. Why do wrathful babes zigzag on revenge always earn the abominable guys drinking at some dive bar?
The one scene that brought home the lack of originality was when our heroine FAKK2 takes a dip in a pool and gets dressed in a leather bikini to do battle come the extinguish. It was a shot-for-shot remake of Tarna taking a dip in a pool, then dressing in a leather bikini to do battle in the novel movie. I do not exaggerate, they both assign on their Victoria’s Secret battle gear the SAME Intention. That would have been shapely if this was a apt sequel connected to the previous tale.

But this is not the case.
HM2K is unimaginative. The attempts at jokes all topple flat. You can net more bawdy humor from an episode of South Park on TV. The action scenes are clunky. The … shots do nothing to stagger the libido. There are many other faults, but the main quandary is that someone view this was a colossal understanding and decided to slay their money to get it.
I have been a reader of HM magazine since I was a boy. I was and peaceful am a substantial fan of the first film. HM2K is a spacious disappointment for me. Instead of offering some of today’s best sci-fi writers an opportunity to contribute a compilation of short stories for the modern film, the film makers went with a poorly developed feature length account that is as predictable and tiresome as a merry-go-round at the county fare. Despite the back of unique computers the animation lacks in style and detail as compared with the unusual film. Even the music is abominable this time around! The first film was a successful attempt to translate the style of the magazine to the tremendous mask. HM2K is clearly an attempt to provide the publishers wife (Julie Strain) with star billing in her bear film. Trust me on this one……THIS MOVIE BITES!!

That being said, the movie is adorable, my child loved it. He’s a fan of dogs and of dog sledding and he enjoyed every bit of it!
This direct-to-video movie is a sequel to last year’s Air Buddies. In this one, the five pups regain themselves in Alaska, where they are soon befriended by Shasta, a Husky pup, and his owner, a young boy named Adam. The boy has mammoth dreams of becoming a sled dog racer, and if the Buddies can come by him to the do line they will be on their draw assist home. They turn to a wise obsolete Husky for mentorship, but on the day of the accelerate, the Buds unexpectedly score themselves on their hold. From what I’ve been able to spy of the film I assume many younger kids will esteem it (the puppies are cute), but adults will be bored.

A Great Buy
I’ve only had this camera for a day, but I can tell you right now that it is a good camera. I got this and the dock for the same price as the Kodak Easyshare C743. It takes very good pictures and it is easy to operate. I have had a little trouble with the software as far as transfering pictures to the computer, especially with the select and transfer function. It won’t let me select any pictures to transfer so I have to choose the “Transfer All” function. It works the same way and doesn’t transfer anything that has already been transfered from the camera previously. Another thing I’m not real crazy about is that the videos are in mpeg-4/Quicktime format which makes it more difficult for me to compress the videos to a smaller size so I can send them to family/friends. Overall though I feel this is a good camera for the amateur photographer with the software problem and video being my only complaints.
Eats Batteries Like Crazy
I’ve had this camera for a few months before it started acting *funny”. It won’t turn on unless I use fresh Duracell batteries. I’ve tried all battery brands but this camera only likes fresh from the pack Duracells. It won’t even turn on when I put in rechargeable Duracells. I only get to snap 1 pic too before it completely drains the fresh batteries I just put in.

Davy Crockett is one of Walt Disney’s most endeared and remembered live action characters. He was presented to American audiences by Walt Disney on the Disneyland TV Expose in 1954. He was personified by Fess Parker beloved ever after by his genuine portrayal. This lustrous and bewitching character was first seen in three episodes from the TV prove (”Davy Crockett, Indian Fighter,” “Davy Crockett Goes to Congress” and “Davy Crockett at the Alamo”) . Parker, with his coonskin cap and homespun stutter and witticism created a nationwide phenomenon in 1954. Who can forget “The Ballad Of Davy Crockett” unruffled by George Bruns and Tom Blackburn. Buddy Ebsen played his sidekick George Russel, whose adventures purchase them from Tennessee to Washington, D.C. to the Alamo in the first three episodes. The series’ third episode focusing on the defense of the Alamo, though well remembered, is somewhat labored until we scrutinize the final image of Davy Crockett passing into narrative and glory. This straightforward and beautifully photographed series expounds the virtues of honesty, integrity and bravery. The country could not secure enough of Davy so he and George Russel returned in 1955 for two more episodes (”Davy Crockett’s Keel Boat Hasten” and “Davy Crockett and the River Pirates”) . For Davy Crockett’s second season on television the display was retitled “The Legends of Davy Crockett.” The notable title change came about because we had seen Davy near to his demolish defending the Alamo and Walt Disney wanted to continue bringing us his adventures. “Davy Crockett’s Keel Boat Hasten” is about a riverboat urge between Davy and another American folklore hero Mike Fink. “Davy Crockett and the River Pirates” is about Davy’s attempt to conclude an Indian uprising with Mike Fink’s assistance. In some ways these two episodes are the best. Davy Crockett appears less the frontier fighter and more the good-natured peacemaker in these episodes. The riverboat accelerate with Mike Fink is very engaging and a high point in Disney’s American frontier live action adventures. I don’t even judge John Ford could have filmed this sequence any better. Kenneth Tobey, who worked with John Ford, is pleasurable in a astronomical comedic piece (Fess Parker made brand of Tobey’s performance in a supplemental interview on the DVD) . Walt Disney gave this actor a chance to prove his tall versatility and range as an actor. Also, Mike Fink’s boats may discover a tiny familiar since they are the basis for the riverboat toddle at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. That’s a nice nostalgic tie in! Bert Glennon’s cinematography is beautifully picturesque as ever and is matched seamlessly with some very effective glass shot special effects by Peter Ellenshaw. This is one of the best DVDs to approach from the Disney vaults. Walt Disney introduces each of the five episodes exactly as they were originally presented on the Disneyland TV Explain. The Supplemental Features on this DVD are above and beyond what I had expected. Most of Disney’s DVD extras seem to concentrate on the technical aspects of the feature presentation. This DVD focused more on the phenomenon that the tale of Davy Crockett created and the affect it had and continues to have on those who were brought up in those times. There are two exceptional Features: “A Conversation with Fess Parker” and “The Davy Crockett Craze.” “The Gallery” of photos and memorabilia is also grand. “A Conversation with Fess Parker” really hit home with me. Fess Parker appeared to be the trustworthy article that he was. In a world of eroded morals filled with dirt and filth everywhere you turn it was more than comforting to hear Fess Parker’s fond recollections of his portrayal and the ideals that Walt immortalized through the tales of this legendary character. If your eyes feel a limited watery its because your remembering a time not so long ago when our heroes were sincere heroes. This is one of the best and should support hold the record alive for those that lived it, those that loved it and for those that will someday be touched by it.
I have a confession to produce. Even with as gargantuan a Disney fan as I am, I had never seen any of the Davy Crockett movies before this came out. I’d seen pictures and heard stories of the Crockett craze, but had no thought what these movies were really all about.
This area of DVD’s contains all five of the Davy Crockett episodes from the TV reveal Disneyland as they originally aired. This includes the opening point to animation, Walt’s intros and outros, and promos for next week’s episode. They are presented here unedited and in their new order. Leonard Maltin introduces each episode and hosts the interviews on the second disc. Of those, the one about the Davy Crockett craze is ok, but hearing Fess Parker’s memories is animated, especially to a Disney fan like me. The portray and sound quality is vast for something from the 50’s, although I did peer that the represent does go to dark and white once per episode.
Watching these for the first time over the weekend, I was captivated by the movies. The scenery is splendid and the acting is first-rate. There are a couple spots where a couple stories seem to fling, but they never last long. My favorites are the two on the second disc, particularly the keel boat rush. Level-headed, I conception to rewatch all the episodes on these DVDs many more times.
Any Disney fan will be blissful to have these in their collection. They are a fun crawl to yesteryear for every generation to devour.
